Are you getting married in Vermont? One of the perks of being a Vermont wedding photographer is that I get to travel around my beautiful home state. I love living among the Green Mountains and being able to see the breath-taking autumn foliage every year. It’s a unique state with so much natural beauty and small-town charm. You can’t help but fall in love with the rural landscape complete with rolling hills, pretty farms, and historic covered bridges. I have lived in Vermont multiple times throughout my life. My wife and I lived here as an engaged couple while we were planning our wedding in 2012. Now we live here with our three daughters. We own a sugarbush and I make maple syrup when I’m not shooting weddings. One of my favorite things to do with my daughters is to stand on the shores of Lake Champlain, watch the waves ripple, and look for Champ. It has a very special place in our hearts. I have to pinch myself that I’m a professional and I get to photograph weddings in this stunning region.

My style of wedding photography is very natural. No awkward posing, no doing things twice just to bag the shot. I leave you to be in the moment and truly experience and enjoy your day. Sure, you can have photos that are pretty and staged, but they’ll pretty quickly become meaningless and who wants that? It’s so much better to have photos of real moments that actually happened at your wedding, this way you can reminisce together when you’re old and grey. Whether you’re after an outdoor adventure, great food, or to immerse yourself in the seasons. Vermont is exploding with beauty, nature, and experiences. It’s also known to be one of the most inclusive and liberal states in the nation. The people who live here have a tradition of progressive mindsets and laid-back attitudes. Welcoming 13 million visitors every year, many of whom are having their wedding. Vermont and its world-famous foliage are top of the bucket list for tourists and adventurers all over the globe.

A visual feast for the eyes, the Green Mountains dominate the state of Vermont. They run for 155 miles, from Quebec to Massachusetts, and take the form of rolling, gentle hills. The state of Vermont and the Green Mountain range have a close, symbiotic relationship. The state’s name comes from a fusion of the French words ‘vert’ (green) and ‘mont’ (mountain), and its nickname of the ‘Green Mountain State’ is frequently used. The Long Trail forms the backbone of the mountain range and is the country’s oldest long-distance hiking trail. It also provides a tour of one of the Eastern United States’ most fascinating and diverse ecosystems. The Long Trail served as the inspiration for the Appalachian Trail, which overlaps the southern half of the Long Trail before heading towards New Hampshire, just north of Killington Peak. The Green Mountain National Forest is Vermont’s only public, federally managed national forest, and boasts a variety of tree species, such as yellow birch, beech, sugar maple, red maple, hemlock, paper birch, green ash, black ash, and white ash. With a landscape to die for, Vermont is home to majestic geographical features, as well as nature-loving people. The views of the New York Adirondacks are second to none in Vermont. The romantic landscape and historied architecture hark back to time long ago. The Green Mountain National Park situated in the heart of Vermont is something to be amazed by. Or the world-famous fall foliage, crystal lakes, sky-high peaks, flowering gardens, and peaceful woodlands. Many of these natural beauty spots are the perfect backdrop for a wedding and stunning to photograph.

WEDDING VENUES IN VERMONT

Bride and grooms travel from all over the country and bring their guests to celebrate their special day in this majestic place. The incredible backdrops and wonderful scenery make it an opportunity that cannot be missed. Before you choose your wedding venue in Vermont, you should consider the season that you will be getting married in. Will it be spring when there are flowers starting to bloom also the potential for mud? Or maybe it will be summer, and you can take advantage of the warmer weather and later sunsets to have your ceremony and reception outdoors. Imagine standing by the lake with a glass of champagne and watching the sun slowly set over the New York Adirondacks. If you get married in autumn the air will be crisp and your photographs will be set amongst a stunning background of the reds, oranges, and yellows of the changing fall foliage. Why not have your engagement photoshoot in an apple orchard at harvest time! Romantic and cosy winter wonderland weddings are an option too. What could be more magical than riding in a horse-drawn sleigh with the bells ringing and the snow gently falling around you? Whether you choose a mountain, barn or city venue location, your guests will be enchanted by all that the state has to offer. Patiently observe in the Champlain Islands:

You may spot a moose emerging from the lake. Or a rutting cow and her calves. If you wait in watch for the birds of the forest – the hermit thrush, pileated woodpecker, robin, hawks, or bald eagles which have been successfully restored and no longer on the state’s list of endangered or threatened species. If you are patient, you may catch sight of a loon on a silent pond or hear a barred owl call near Rock Point. If you have a 200-400mm telephoto lens and fancy yourself a wildlife photographer then you will be delighted by these luscious surroundings. Watch in wait for the white-tailed deer and squirrels. Look to the water for the frogs and toads, who will offer their spring choral performance. Lock up your chickens to protect them from bobcats, lynx, fisher cats, coyote, and foxes. Don’t run or climb trees to get away from a black bear. Catch sight of the beaver building their dam along a wooded stream. Catamounts or mountain lions no longer roam the state, but The University of Vermont’s men’s basketball team is called the Catamounts and so you would be forgiven for thinking that you might spot on while you’re here. Why not squeeze in a falconry education before you leave? Your guests experience at this scenic wedding won’t be complete without sampling some of the local flavor. There is a huge variety of places to eat and drink and Vermont is known for its farm-to-table food culture. Try a craft beer at the artisanal Hill Farmstead Brewery or a hard cider at Citizen Cider. There are so many breweries and microbreweries to try that you can create your own beer trail! You could also treat your guests to a tour of the Ben and Jerry’s ice cream factory, Vermont’s most iconic scoop shop.

If the past is your thing, dive into the history of Ethan Allen who is one of Vermont’s founders. He is best known for the capture of Fort Ticonderoga as the leader of the Green Mountain Boys. The Abenaki Tribe were the original inhabitants of the land. Vermont was the first state to pass marriage equality through the legislature, and the first state whose constitution banned slavery. Explore the African American Heritage Trail and illuminate Vermont’s civil rights roots and black history. Discover the reasons why so many people are proud to make Vermont their home.

PHOTOGRAPHY IN AND AROUND THE GREEN MOUNTAINS

If you want something a little tamer, you could visit a farmer’s market, enjoy a show at the Flynn Center, or have dinner and a spot of shopping on Church Street, which hosts an incredible variety of independent vendors. Weddings can take place in many locations, but Burlington, Shelburne, and Stowe have plenty to entertain and excite.

What better way to end a day full of wedding bliss than sleeping under the stars. If this isn’t your thing, there are a range of wedding accommodation choices at your fingertips – from treehouses to renovated barns, quaint bed and breakfasts, intimate log cabins, tipis, yurts, glamping and more. For places to stay with both indoor and outdoor activities to suit every member of your party, there are endless great options. You could indulge at the Mountain Top Resort or rest on the banks of Lake Champlain at Hotel Vermont. Photographers love such places as Maquam Barn and Winery, Basin Harbor Club, Whaleback Vinery , The inn at Weathersfield, The Equinox, The hilden, Wild Sugar Homestead, Lake Bomoseen Lodge and Shelburne Farms. Or you could think outside of the box and imagine an alfresco wedding dinner underneath a canopy of twinkling lights. You could put up a tent at Waterfront Park in Burlington and make this happen. Vermont is also the ideal location for an adventure wedding or elopement.
