Melissa and Alex Brympton House wedding last weekend — properly Brympton d’Evercy, a Grade I listed manor near Yeovil, with gardens just starting to come into their own and one of those properly warm spring days that still feels like a small gift this early in the year.
The house has passed through six families since it was built, and it’s the kind of place that’s been written about for a century for a reason — one architectural historian, writing in the 1920s, called it the house that best sums up English country life. You feel that the moment you’re on the grounds.

Getting Ready
I always try to arrive early enough to catch the quiet before the day properly starts — the last cup of tea, someone doing up a button, that stretch of time when everyone’s still half-dressed and the nerves haven’t quite kicked in yet. Melissa got ready in one of Brympton’s upstairs rooms, morning light coming in low through the windows. It’s one of my favourite parts of any wedding day, because nobody’s performing yet. They’re just getting ready.
The Ceremony
Brympton’s grounds do a lot of the work for you as a venue — the stone, the proportions, the gardens all give a wedding day a kind of gravity most places can’t. But the ceremony itself belonged to Melissa and Alex. I shot it hybrid, the way I always do — digital alongside 35mm on Portra 400. There’s a formal portrait of the two of them on the front steps afterwards that I think will end up being the one they keep coming back to in twenty years. Nothing staged beyond asking them to stand there. Everything else was just watching and waiting for it to happen.
The Reception
Guests drifted out onto the lawn as the afternoon went on, nobody in a hurry to go back inside. That’s usually when the best photographs happen — not the planned moments, but the ones in between. A conversation caught mid-laugh. Someone’s grandmother finally sitting down with a glass of something. The light starting to go gold.
